Data Management
All OceanSITES members agree to make their data openly available to the community as soon as available. Data usually pass minimal quality control, particularly for real-time and recovered data. Generally, OceanSITES only publishes the “best” version available of each dataset and does not maintain older versions once a given version has been superseded.
The OceanSITES data flow is carried out through three organizational units: Principal Investigators (PIs), Data Assembly Centers (DACs), and Global Data Assembly Centers (GDACs). PIs assemble data and metadata into OceanSITES-compliant files and then, either directly or through a DAC, send the data to one of the two OceanSITES GDACs. The GDAC places the files on its publicly accessible ftp server, and within 24 hours adds the file to its data catalog. From there, it sends the file to the other OceanSITES GDAC so that both are synced to each other. Data are archived in snapshot form at the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).
The OceanSITES data management team has developed an implementation of NetCDF based on the community-supported Climate and Forecast (CF) standard, which supplies a standard vocabulary and some metadata conventions. The OceanSITES specification includes some requirements beyond the CF standard, for better data discovery and provenance information.

Data Management Team
OceanSITES Data Management Team (DMT) meets every month to keep growing and updating the strong OceanSITES data management system
which includes:
• OceanSITES netcdf ocean data format endorsed by GOOS;
• New standard names and metadata discussion on different topics;
• Work with two Global Data Assembly Centers (GDACS) and OceanOPS ensuring data and metadata from the sites flows in a common format and is made publically available.
All OceanSITES members are invited to join DMT to post questions, see answers, and contribute to other helpful topics about how to collect and share OceanSITES data.
